Bridgeport Community Garden - Feeding the People Bridgeport Style

Expanding Community Beyond Our Four Walls

Bridgeport United Church of Christ breaks ground for Bridgeport Community Garden: Food for the People.

In an effort to connect with our housed and houseless neighbors, we are transforming our outdoor space to be a vegetable garden that will both feed the community and be a place of gathering and welcome. Partially funded, through grants from the Hardy Plant Society and the East Multnomah Water Conservation, along with private donations, we completed the first phase of our project.

In partnership with Portland Edible Gardens, the first six beds have been installed. We’re currently raising money for our second two phases.

Several members of Bridgeport came out to work together to break down the old beds, hauling them away and repurposing as much soil as we could. Under the direction of Portland Edible Gardens, and with a little help from Voz Worker Education Project, within weeks, the boxes were in place and filled with soil, ready for planting.

Going forward, the plan is for community members to plant various vegetables in the boxes, to build more beds, including some ADA beds and to add benches to create a sitting area near the garden. Portland Edible Gardens will stay involved after construction, providing mentoring and support.

Thank you to all those who helped make this dream a reality!
