Season of Justice and Compassion

We’re now into this Bridgeport season that runs from Easter Sunday through the Sunday that is Pentecost. In this season we are encouraged to put our faith into action, practice forgiveness, and speak the truth in love to create justice, build community and promote spiritual growth.

This year we are trying to understand a bit more about what sustainability means for us as a church community. Sustainability is a big, kind of fuzzy word and it means different things to different people.

As we talk about sustainability at Bridgeport, we wanted to focus on 4 general areas:

  • our carbon footprint – our use of fossil fuels and how we can reduce that use
  • eating food that is produced close to home
  • reusing & recycling
  • enjoying a life that is less encumbered by ‘stuff’

Last Sunday, we were challenged us to fast one meal a week – you choose which one – and donate the money or food you save to Fish Emergency Services (the direct-service agency we give our Bridge Garden produce to) which helps about 1,700 Oregonians per month. There is a basket in the back of the sanctuary for all your contributions.

Over the course of the next few weeks you will hear more about sustainability at Bridgeport, and you can throw in your two cents. Literally

Coming up

These dates are part of the Season of Inquiry calendar, see center column.

Fri, Apr 18, 6:30pm — Come to Shabbat service at ShirTikvah. After the service (about 7:15), Rev. Susan and Rabbi Stone will engage in another fascinating discussion about the connections between Judaism & Christianity. This time they'll look at Passover & how it was absorbed into Christianity.

Sun, Apr 20 —  After church, stick around for the All Team Meeting! Everyone is invited to enjoy some yummy soup and brainstorm activities for The Season of Community (Pentecost 2 – Aug. 31) during which we celebrate the creation of our church community in all our diversity, support one another in every phase of life, and strive to mature in our faith.

Sun, Apr 27 — Learn to make tamales. The class will cost $25 and participants will each make twelve tamales. Class size is limited to 10, but if there is enough demand, we will offer more classes. Sign up now through the church office.
