About Bridgeport

People

We're a different kind of church!  Where thoughtful and compassionate progressive people can be challenged and nurtured by a community that seeks to understand what Christianity can really mean. We are redefining the idea of church for ourselves and generating opportunities for people to remember (or discover!) their faith and to create community.

All kinds of people come to Bridgeport: women and men; kids and grandparents; families and single people; lesbian, gay, bisexual and heterosexual people. People who gave up on church years ago and people who just left the one up the street. People who care about the world. People like you. We share the essential theological conviction that we must all do whatever we can, whenever we can, to work for justice and peace in the world — social, economic, political and environmental.

Children are welcomed as vital members of the community. We sing, pray, listen to a sermon and laugh out loud. We have silence, wonderful music, and good coffee, too.

Vision of the Almighty

This is a church where people can wrestle with the astonishing idea that God loves the world so much that (s)he would choose to experience the depth and breadth of human experience, from suffering the betrayal of friends, to the pain of a wounded body, even to the lonesome powerlessness of a horrible death.

What do we make of the crucifixion? If sacrificial atonement is ethically unacceptable, how else can we understand it? These questions and many more guide our faith journey.

History and future

Bridgeport began in 1998. We have grown from meeting once a month to worshiping weekly. We have gone from being a wild idea to being a vital and growing congregation of the UCC. We have a thriving children's program, an amazing choir, and a challenging adult education program. All this has happened because Bridgeport is speaking to people in important ways. We look forward to welcoming you!
